Gabbie Hanna Wiki

Dandelion” is a song by American singer-songwriter Gabbie Hanna. It was released on April 17, 2020 independently as the lead single from her second extended play Bad Karma.[1]

Background

The song and the EP were announced by Hanna on April 11, 2020.[2] She decided to release the EP after the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the release of her debut studio album This Time Next Year.

Hanna has said herself that the song has no definitive meaning and that it is meant to be interpreted however the listener wants. One fan interpreted the song in a YouTube comment, saying that she "still learns to love herself and all of her [flaws] people have criticized her for, and continues to thrive and succeed – Which essentially points to the theme of the EP, 'Bad Karma'.”

Promotion

To promote the song, Hanna and her fans on Twitter spent the night of April 13, 2020 responding to hate comments with "stream and download dandelion april 17". She related it to how K-Pop fans reply to tweets with videos of their favorite artists performing telling people to stream their new music. The tactic ended up working well as Hanna ended up trending on Twitter the next day.[3]

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
When I was a little girl, my mama said to me
"What's your favorite flower, darling? I'll get you the seed"
I said, "Dandelion, Dandelion"
That one’s so pretty
She said, "Child, that one's not a flower, that one's just a weed."

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, what a shame
Now it don't look the same
Guess it don't look the same
Oh, what a shame

[Chorus]
Call me what you want
(Dandelion, dandelion)
You can't stop me multiplyin'
Pull me from the dirt
(Dandelion, dandelion)
No, you don't want me in your garden
Dandelion, dandelion
(Dandelion, dandelion)
(Dandelion, dandelion)

[Verse 2]
I still loved those mellow yellow petals anyway
What's that thing they say about a rose by any other name?
Then my fragile flower turned into a ball of grey
So, I took a breath and made a wish and blew them all away

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, what a shame
Now it don't look the same
Guess it don't look the same
Oh, what a shame

[Chorus]
Call me what you want
(Dandelion, dandelion)
You can't stop me multiplyin'
Pull me from the dirt
(Dandelion, dandelion)
No, you don't want me in your garden
Dandelion, dandelion
Call me what you want
(Dandelion, dandelion)
You can't stop me multiplyin’
(Dandelion, dandelion)
Pull me from the dirt
(Dandelion, dandelion)
No, you don't want me in your garden
Dandelion, dandelion
(Dandelion, dandelion)

[Outro]
So I took a breath and made a wish and blew them all away

Music video

The songs animated music video, animated by Hok, was released alongside the single on April 17, 2020. This was the first animation Hok had ever done. Hanna had originally asked him if he knew any animators but he instead took it upon himself to make the video.[4]
