"Medicate" is a song by American singer-songwriter Gabbie Hanna. It was released on February 1, 2019 independently as the lead single from her debut extended play 2WayMirror.[1]

Background

Hanna wrote the song about depression and anxiety and whether medication can truly treat mental illness or if it's simply just a temporary fix. On Instagram, she said that the song is “for anyone who’s ever felt like a science experiment gone wrong, for anyone who’s questioned if their brain is broken, for anyone who’s ever wondered if their feelings are justified,” and that “depression is scary. Anxiety is scary. The idea of chemically altering your mind is scary.”[2]

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I'm unwell, thanks for asking
Don't mind me 'cause I'm just passing by
In this life, been a while
Thought that you forgot, but that's alright
How've you been? Glad to hear it
Just one question if you can bear it
Do you ever miss me, too?
'Cause I spend my days still thinking of you

[Pre-Chorus]
Should I take a pill to numb the pain?
Change the chemicals inside my brain
I worry I won't be the same
But I guess that that's the point

[Chorus]
Can you medicate a broken heart?
Make your tragedies a work of art
Medicate a broken heart
Build your walls up just to rip them apart
Is this the way to fix this or is this a quick fix?
I really couldn't say
Can you medicate, medicate, medicate it away?

[Verse 2]
Doctor Smile, kill me with kindness
And don't ask about the side effects
Swallow hard, kill sadness with science
But the aftermath might make you sick

[Pre-Chorus]
Should I take a pill to numb the pain?
Change the chemicals inside my brain
I worry I won't be the same
But I guess that that's the point

[Chorus]
Can you medicate a broken heart?
Make your tragedies a work of art
Medicate a broken heart
Build your walls up just to rip them apart
Is this the way to fix this or is this a quick fix?
I really couldn't say
Can you medicate, medicate, medicate it away?

[Post-Chorus]
Whoa, whoa
Oh, medicate it away
Whoa, whoa
Oh, medicate it away

[Bridge]
They say give yourself a break
They tell me to medicate
I don't wanna medicate

[Chorus]
Oh, can you medicate a broken heart?
Make your tragedies a work of art
Medicate a broken heart
Build your walls up just to rip them apart
Is this the way to fix this or is this a quick fix?
I really couldn't say
Can you medicate, medicate, medicate it away?

[Post-Chorus]
Whoa, whoa
Oh, medicate it away
Whoa, whoa (Whoa)
Oh, medicate it away

[Outro]
Oh, medicate it away
Oh, medicate it away

Music video

The songs music video, directed by Ryan Parma, was released the following day on February 2, 2019.[3] The video features Hanna depressed and alone, sitting by herself in a circle of black folding chairs, the camera panning around her in a circle as she sings the song. Near the end of the song, the windows in the room become barred and a healthier, more dressed up version of Hanna appears in the seat directly across from her and the two sing to each other.
